SCHOOL-CENTRED TRAINING.

ZONE TRAIN TO TEACH FACTFILE WITH government cuts and concern over

public sector funding, some newly qualified teachers are experiencing

stiff competition for their first teachingpostinanincreasingly

competitive market. However, with a number of different routes into the

teaching profession, graduates wanting to train as teachers can give

themselves the best job prospects by thinking carefully about which

initial teacher training route to take. Recent statistics show that

trainee teachers who study ‘on the job’ through a

school-centred initial teacher training course, or an employment-based

initial teacher training course, are more likely to get jobs than those

who do a more traditional university course. Last year, 90 per cent of

students from 16 school-centred course providers entered teaching – only

two universities achieved the same figure. So why are teachers who

studied on a school-centred route more likely to get a job at the end of

their training? Abi Horsburgh, marketing manager at the Robert Robert, Henry Martyn 1837-1923.
