Major Pharmacy Technician Associations

Although requiring no formal education, the pharmacy-technician profession has become quite professionalized. More and more states are requiring national certification or training for licensing and registration of pharmacy technicians. Certified technicians also typically have continuing education requirements that need to be met. As such, the need exists for beneficial and effective pharmacy technician associations. Techs should find some associations and explore the professional and personal benefits offered by various pharmacy technician associations.

National Pharmacy Technician Association

NPTA claims to be the largest pharmacy technician association. It has memberships for current pharmacy technicians, educators and students. One of the primary benefits offered by the association are its advanced certification programs. These include chemo, compounding and sterile products.

NPTA can also help students who need training for the national certification tests offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians. The association does not run these tests but has online pharmacy technician training programs for those organizations’ exams. You may call 888-247-8700. The total cost is as little as $1900 for the training course.

The National Pharmacy Technician Association is also a good source of continuing education credits. This can be important, as organizations like the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board require 20 or so hours of CE credits each year to maintain certification. The “Today’s Technician” magazine can deliver 12 or so credits per year all by itself and comes with your NPTA membership.

Another solid benefit of NPTA membership is a support network of professional pharmacy technicians. If you have legal questions or need other advice, you can lean on the network to help you.

Like most associations, you can also get the benefit of other types of pharmacy tech training, career advancement, networking through seminars with member discounts and advocacy for the pharmacy technician industry. Find out more about NPTA at PharmacyTechnician.org.

American Association of Pharmacy Technicians

This pharmacy technician association has been around since 1979 and also offers memberships to students seeking to become techs, current pharmacy technicians and educators.

AAPT focuses on continuing education for pharmacy technicians and training for future pharmacy techs. It also seeks to further professionalize the field for the advancement of all pharmacy technicians.

New or existing techs looking for a job can use the American Association of Pharmacy Technicians Career Center at pharmpt.us.associationcareernetwork.com/Common/HomePage.aspx.

Besides those benefits, there is also the inherent association value of networking with other professionals in the field. You will have access to a membership directory after joining.
