All about the College of Education

Colleges of education are many at times also referred to as schools of education. Some exist as stand alone colleges while others exist as divisions or departments within a university. Whichever the case their major objective is to offer scholarly education to people interested in the education field. This field comprises of social sciences such as history, sociology, political science, economics, linguistics, psychology, public policy, and others.

Types of programs

The programs offered by these colleges in most cases are research-based. These lead to other degrees such as the Master (M.Ed.) followed by Doctor Degree (Ed.D), and Master of Arts (M.A) followed by Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in addition to Specialist (Ed.S). Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T), M.Ed, and M.A can also be professionally taken as teacher-teaching programs. Licensure programs and teacher certification are also offered by colleges of education to undergraduate students. It is a requirement for such colleges to offer graduate programs related to educational administration, curriculum and instruction, teacher preparation, as well as public policy and learning. Some of the best colleges offer additional programs essential to the schooling of student for example counseling psychology and school counseling.

Major areas of interest

A College of education, just like any other college, has special interests in their academic practice and research. First in line is teacher-tutoring, course component (curriculum) and deliver of the same. Educational administration is the second most important interest of such colleges. The edification sector requires leaders with specific education as to the administration of the sector for example superintendents and principles. Therefore the college of learning strives to ensure that its course component includes educational administration. Schooling policy and reform is the last but not least principle area of interest. A majority of the educational colleges many at times find themselves engaged in policy making or design as relates to teaching. In this case therefore aspects of assessment, teacher quality and equity have been a major concern of all the schools. Equitable access to quality tutoring is an issue so common that no one can ignore, with a keen eye on immigrants, the minority and low income communities placed at the center of research.


There has been a bit of criticism as relates to the status quo visible within college of education. Traditional scholars have from time to time asserted that a typical college of teaching tend to be politically biased (Left-wing). They argue for socialist philosophies. They claim that the left wing colleges offer substandard academic levels with irrelevant courses. The other proponents claim that the social, professional and academic environment of the many schools of instruction seems unfavorable to the opponents of the left leaning ideologies. Educational equity as an interest is thus forced to cross the line between political activism and the traditional academic research.

Others have also criticized the cost of acquiring education from schools of edification. They've gone as far as referring to them as cash cows indicating that they are too expensive. Some don't think it is all that necessary to acquire an advanced degree in edification in order to become a good teacher.
