Advanced Life Support Training for Medical Professionals

One of the requirements of many medical professionals is ACLS certification. If you’ve recently entered a medical career or you plan on doing so in the future, you can expect to go through many courses such as this one even after you graduate from medical school. These set out standard life-saving procedures so that no matter where you are in the country, you will be performing the same tasks in the same way. Two of the most important courses for medical personnel are basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Basic life support is the more widely required of the two and any medical professional or emergency responder should be trained and certified in BLS. ACLS training & certification is a more advanced course of study, and is the next step beyond BLS.

What Does it Cover?

Basic life support is designed to keep a patient alive until they can be seen by someone who is ACLS certified. It’s the person with ACLS certification, whether it be a doctor, nurse, or emergency responder, who will be ultimately responsible for saving the patient’s life. This means an ACLS student has to not only understand how to treat life-threating conditions, but understand the underlying problem or problems that caused them. They must be able to interpret a patient’s vital signs and know what techniques or medicines to use to save their life. For this reason, they must have extensive training in pharmaceuticals, intubation, electrocardiograms, and many other tools that can help to diagnose the root problem. Anyone working in an emergency care situation should become ACLS certified.

How to Become Certified

The certification process is extensive because of the amount of material that you’ll need to cover. However, in many cases you can receive your ACLS training & certification online from the comfort of your home. These courses can be completed on your own schedule, whether you can commit to them full-time or you only have an hour a day to work on them. Once you finish the courses, you’ll be required to pass an exam, after which you will receive your official ACLS certification. This certification will generally be valid for two years, after which you’ll need to become recertified to ensure that all of the material is still fresh. Recertification also lets you keep up-to-date with the most recent changes in the field, since doctors and researchers are continually making changes to try to more effectively save lives.
